Have you ever watched the metamorphosis of someone’s facebook relationship status. First it’s single, then all of the sudden you start seeing random pictures of them with another person. Pretty soon you start seeing the pictures become more frequent and then the infamous picture of the couple holding hands is posted. This is something they talked about in depth, “Should we post the picture of us holding hands” “Will our friends be cool with this” “Do our outfits match in this picture”. Once they finally make a decision on this national security issue, they immediately update their status to “In A Relationship”.
This is a beautiful thing. Until, a few weeks later the pictures are scarce, they start posting quotes from Emily Dickinson and are obviously listening to a lot of Nickleback. Relationship status update: It’s complicated. Then it all becomes just a little bit sad and weird if you are friends with both of them.
Life can be this way sometimes. One day you feel like frolicking through a field of flowers and singing to the top of your lungs. The next day, something happens and it all changes. Such is life: complicated. A myth that a lot of new believers hold to is ‘When I give my life to Jesus everything becomes roses and butterflies”. Actually, sometimes the exact opposite happens. In fact Jesus prepared us for this in John 15:18 when He said, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.” When you are walking with Christ things won’t always be easy, no matter how good of a person you are.
Jesus went further in explaining this to us in John 16:33 when He said, “I have told you these things, so that you may have peace in Me. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Next time it gets complicated, whether it’s relationships, finances, kids, hopes or dreams. Remember, Jesus said it would and He’s promised to be there for you to give you peace. Life is always better when you are holding the hand of the Savior of the world. It may be complicated, just remember, you’re not alone, Jesus is with you.
